A radar chart is a profile summary—not a player verdict.
Radars compress several metrics into one recognisable shape. Their value comes from making patterns visible. Their risk comes from hiding choices about metrics, direction, scaling and the comparison cohort.

Each axis represents one metric, usually converted to a percentile rank. The centre is a low value and the outer edge is a high value relative to the chosen cohort.
A radar can show that a midfielder ranks strongly for progression and creation but less strongly for carrying or goal threat. That observation creates questions for deeper analysis.
Summarise a role-specific profile, identify unusual combinations of traits and communicate where further investigation should begin.
Choose metrics that describe the role
Start with the recruitment brief. Select a small set of metrics linked to the actions the player must perform. Six to eight well-chosen axes are usually easier to interpret than a crowded chart containing every available statistic.
Shot stopping, area control, distribution and involvement.
Defensive duels, aerial security, interceptions and progression.
Possession, progression, creation, defensive work and carrying.
Box presence, shooting, expected goals, link play and pressing work.
Balance volume and efficiency
Pairing an action count with its success rate can prevent one-sided conclusions. High progressive-pass volume and low accuracy describes a different profile from moderate volume and elite accuracy. Neither is automatically better without role context.
Set direction deliberately
Most radar axes use “higher is better”, but not every raw metric works that way. Make the direction explicit and avoid adding metrics whose desirable direction is ambiguous.
Define a fair comparison cohort
A percentile radar is entirely dependent on its comparison group. The same raw output produces a different shape when positions, minutes or ages change.
- Use comparable positional roles.
- Apply a defensible minimum-minutes threshold.
- Match the recruitment age window where appropriate.
- Consider competition and team context when interpreting the result.
- Display the cohort definition alongside the chart.
A radar comparing a full-back with all outfield players might make crossing look ordinary and defensive actions unusually low. A focused full-back cohort gives the numbers a more useful frame.
Build the radar step by step
- Define the role: write the football question before choosing axes.
- Select the cohort: filter to plausible peers with reliable minutes.
- Choose metrics: use role-relevant evidence with clear direction.
- Calculate ranks: convert valid raw values to percentiles within that cohort.
- Plot consistently: keep axes, order and scale identical when comparing players.
- Label the context: state season, cohort, minutes and data source.

Begin with the axes rather than the area. Identify the two or three strongest and weakest relative traits, then check their raw values and the distribution across the cohort.
Compare like with like
When comparing players, use identical axes in identical order against the same cohort. Changing an axis or peer group changes the question and makes visual comparison unreliable.
Look for combinations
The most useful insight is often a combination: a centre-back who combines aerial security with progressive passing, or a winger who combines carrying with chance creation. These patterns can identify profiles worth reviewing.
Ask what the chart cannot show
A radar cannot explain decision quality, positioning, tactical instruction, physical capacity, character, injury availability or whether an action occurred under pressure. Those questions require other evidence.
Avoid misleading radar charts
Too many axes
Crowded charts become decorative rather than interpretable.
Mixed positions
Incompatible roles distort which actions appear exceptional.
Hidden sample sizes
Small-minute players can create unstable, dramatic shapes.
Changing axis order
Shapes look different even when the underlying values are unchanged.
Area equals quality
A larger polygon does not prove better tactical fit or overall ability.
No raw values
Ranks alone hide the magnitude and football meaning of differences.
